Whale Shark, Sorsogon

The Whale Shark which is locally called “Butanding” is the biggest fish and shark in the world. Despite their enormous size, whale sharks only feed on plankton.

Interestingly, each whale sharks, like the unique human fingerprint, has a distinctive spot patterning area above its left pectoral fin (gill area). This special feature allows scientists to identify individual whale sharks.

The Philippines has banned all fishing, selling, importing, and exporting of whale sharks for commercial purposes because they are endangered species. This magnificent fish is listed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.

Whale shark watching is a favorite tourist destination in Sorsogon and also in Oslob, Cebu.
